How Liquids Can Damage Your Tablet and Phone
There are several ways liquids can damage your phone or tablet- and they don’t always happen immediately.
- Short Circuits – The first and most obvious can happen straight away if even a small amount of liquid gets inside your phone. Almost all liquids conduct electricity, which can cause short circuits and damage the electronics (as well as being possibly dangerous to you).
- Ongoing Corrosion Due to Dampness – Secondly, any liquid remaining inside- even tap water- can cause ongoing corrosion of the electronics. Some nooks and crannies inside your phone will take a long time to dry out on their own– even if your phone appears okay, further corrosion could be happening.
- Continued Long-Term Problems from Residue – Finally, the problems don’t end once everything has dried. Depending upon what the liquid is, it will almost always leave behind some form of residue. The dried residue from some drinks and substances can cause additional corrosion and/or short circuits, especially as your phone warms up and conditions change in normal use.
Even if you think your phone is okay, it’s generally a good idea to have it looked at and avoid risking additional damage.

- If it’s plugged into an external charger, power supply or other device, disconnect that immediately if possible or shut off the power. (If the mains socket itself is wet, turn off the mains power elsewhere).
- Remove the battery if possible (and if it’s safe to do so; remember that wet batteries can still cause shock).
- While you can dry the outside of the phone, please don’t attempt to dry it out internally (e.g. via rice or heat). This still leaves a residue and contaminants which are harder to clean and can actually increase corrosion.
- Do not attempt to use it again until it’s been looked at.
